A bunded oil tank is an oil tank with an inner tank inside it, whereas a single skinned oil tank has just one layer. The oil is stored in the inner tank, and the outer layer gives extra protection again leaks and spillages. They are considered to be the safest option for domestic and commercial oil storage.
Your oil tank paperwork will detail this information for you, but if you don’t have your paperwork then a registered oil tank engineer will be able to easily tell you this. There will also be a metal plate on your tank detailing the tank specifications, including size.
In England it is not a legal requirement to have a bunded oil tank if your oil tank holds less than 2,500 litres and if it is a domestic tank. If you live in Wales, it is a legal requirement that you must have a bunded tank, not a single skinned tank. If you require a tank for commercial oil storage, this must be a bunded oil tank.
Bunded oil tanks usually have a lifespan of around 10-15 years, but can last up to 20 years with proper care and regular maintenance by registered engineers.
This can depend on the tank manufacturer/provider, however, many bunded oil tanks come with a warranty of up to 10 years. Centurion bunded tanks carry a market-leading 12 year warranty.
